The Spanish traductor jurado: a case where everything had to be re-translated on the spot

A family was relocating to Spain on residence for people of means. In advance, back in Russia, they ordered notarised translations into Spanish of the whole package: civil-registry certificates, police records, income certificates, bank statements — a substantial sum for the volume. Already in Spain, the gestor — the person who handles bureaucracy — said all of it would have to be re-translated by a traductor jurado. The money for the first translation was effectively lost.

How a traductor jurado differs from a Russian notarised translation

A traductor jurado is a translator accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and empowered to certify a translation with their own signature, seal, and a certifying formula (certificación). A notary does not take part in this procedure. Such a translation is in itself an official document throughout Spain.

The Russian model — a qualified translator plus a notary certifying the authenticity of their signature — is for Spanish authorities a foreign procedure they are not obliged to recognise. At the same time an apostille on the Russian original is needed in both cases: the jurado translates the document together with the apostille stamp.

How not to pay twice

Decide in advance where each document is going. To a Spanish state authority (immigration, the registry, a court, a university) — order a traductor jurado straight away, bypassing a Russian notarised translation into Spanish. To the Spanish consulate in Russia — a Russian notarised translation is often enough there, check at the appointment. For internal Russian purposes, a Russian notarised translation is exactly what is needed.

The optimal scheme for relocation: apostille the originals in Russia, and order the translation into Spanish from a traductor jurado — remotely from scans or already on the spot. That way you pay for the translation once and get a document that is accepted without questions.
